“The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep”, memories of grammar school English lessons come flooding back, the air is brisk but is a welcome fresh assault on the body, numbed from watching TV it needs a re-awakening, nerve endings are brought screaming back to full alert, a rude awakening, the skies are grey as if in grumpy acquiesence to the weather, trudging through the woods with a snowy dough of earth and white underfoot, feels like it is snowing but it is just the trees casting off their heavy head of snow, which comes to earth with a ‘splat’, dodged that one but no, another one gets me, there is no escape it seems, the landscape is transformed, a beautiful wonderful winter stage has been created, snow is such a great leveller of detail, a temporary cleanser of the ruin that man has wrought on the landscpe, finally home to a warm meal, to reflect on the day and Robert Frost, who had miles to go before he slept, unlike me….
